How to Make Money as a Student

Title pin

Student loan not enough? Want to save for a gap year? Whatever your reason for needing extra money, there are loads of ways for students to earn money on the side of your studies. University is also a great time to develop a side hustle that you could continue after you graduate (see #3 ;)).

TRANSCRIBE VIDEOS

Whenever you’ve watched a video do you ever wonder who wrote the subtitles? Well it could be you! Most companies outsource the transcribing of their videos to companies who take on freelancers to complete the transcriptions. Companies such as Rev.

I tried Rev and made over £20 in one day, simply transcribing videos. It is a very easy side hustle that comes with full training and is completely flexible to your schedule. You can complete as many videos as you want or as little as you want. All you need is a laptop, internet connection and potentially a pair of headphones so you can hear the audio more clearly.

TAKE SURVEYS

Taking surveys online is a very easy way to make £50-£100 a month without much effort. This is the perfect thing to do instead of mindlessly scrolling through social media, especially if like me you can’t seem to watch tv without doing something else. Perfect opportunity to make a little extra money.

Surveys are very easy, usually take up to 20 minutes and all you have to do is answer questions – most of the time multiple choice. Sometimes a small survey will lead to something bigger, such as a study I was accepted onto which paid £45 to watch the pilot of a new tv series and review it.

Who doesn’t want to get paid to watch tv?

START A BLOG

Blogging can be a highly lucrative side hustle, there are bloggers out there making thousands each month. It has unlimited earning potential, simply takes hard work and a small initial investment. However, this one is definitely not going to make you money tomorrow but if you’ve got a topic you’re passionate about and have the time to put in the effort it can become an amazing money earner.

Here are some other bloggers income reports showing just how worthwhile starting a blog can be!

Mostly Morgan ~ lifestyle blog making $2000 per month

Fitnancials ~ personal finance blog making $4500 per month

Just a Girl and her Blog ~ lifestyle blog making over $50000 per month

These incomes are amazing and will replace working an ordinary 9-5 job! Starting a blog may be the best decision you make and all it takes is a small initial investment into finding a host.

You will want to invest in paid hosting rather than starting with a free provider as when the time comes to monetise your blog you are able to. This blog is hosted by Bluehost, which is a great host to start your blog with as the plans start from only $3.95 a month.

MATCHED BETTING

Matched betting is a risk free way to make money through betting. In its basic term, matched betting is where you place bets on all outcomes so you’re guaranteed a profit. It takes advantage of promotions offered by betting institutions. This is a perfect way for students to make some money each month.

Many people are making £100s each month doing matched betting a few hours each day. All you need is a laptop, be 18 and some initial capital to start betting with (usually £50-£100).

PART TIME JOB

This is the most common way for students to make extra money. Jobs in the hospitality sector are great because most are flexible and can be scheduled around when you have classes.

Alternatively, have a look for jobs being advertised by your uni, most will hire people to lead campus tours, show accommodation or be ambassadors for courses. I’m an ambassador for my course and get paid around £50 for each open day I work.

You could choose to start one of these five or all of the five, they are all flexible and can be worked around each other. Take the plunge and try them out to see which ones you enjoy or have success with.
