April Money Round Up

New month means it’s time to reflect on last month’s spending and earnings! Like all of my monthly money round ups – I will go through every penny out and in of my accounts this month. As well as my net worth progress – spoiler this was a BIG month for my net worth 🤩

Why do I share this?

I know it might seem weird to share this on the internet but I truly believe in creating the type of content that I love and I am currently obsessed with seeing what people spend and earn. I also believe that the best way to break the money taboo is to talk openly about it, so here we are! Hopefully you enjoy this type of content too!!

Context

I am a full-time student living in the north west of the UK, where the cost of living is lower than the average.

This month I spent the majority of my time at work but I did enjoy a lovely night away with two of my best mates – we went to see a comedian we all love and then spent the next day enjoying the sun at the beach. Going on mini-breaks is one of my favourite ways to spend money!!

Now let’s get into the numbers…

SPENDING

Rent = £1330

I paid my final ever student rent instalment this month! This payment covers rent and all bills for the rest of my tenancy which ends in August.

Eating Out = £63.70

I ate out a little bit more than usual this month but it was so worth it!! Finally got to go to Yo! Sushi – absolutely incredible! We ordered so much food and it only came to £13 each 🤯 I also had a few takeaways this month that are included in this total.

Gifts = £70

Gifts I bought this month included a birthday present, a thank-you present and a hotel room for my parents who are coming to visit for my birthday next month 🤩

Personal = £159.94

This category was much much higher than normal!!! Primarily down to having to pay for an emergency hotel room after drinking too much wine at a wedding I attended – waking up £120 poorer with no clue where I was was a great way to kick off April 🤦🏼‍♀️

A number of my daily toiletries also ran out this month – why does this always seem to happen? So these had to be replaced as they are my ride or die.

Social = £3.50

After a very boozy start to the month, I kinda had a self imposed dry month. This £3.50 was for a drink at the wedding I attended before the free wine came out 😅

Groceries = £7.71

Groceries came in way under budget this month simply because I got a £20 Sainsbury’s voucher at the start of the month which covered the majority of my shopping! Money win 💪🏻

Work = £9.98

All spent on food whilst on shift! I separate this out because I don’t see this as “eating out” more of a work expense.

Entertainment = £34.97

This includes my subscriptions – Spotify (£16.99) and book club fees (£1.20). This month I also went to the cinema twice – £5 tickets are just too much of a bargain to miss! The rest was spent on an ebook (£1.78) and renting a flamingo pedlo with my friends at the beach (£5). Honestly that was the best £5 I’ve ever spent – highly recommend!!

Transportation = £21.40

All spent on return tickets to Liverpool to see Ed Gamble! My housemate and I bought these tickets last year for another housemates birthday so I set a sinking fund up to cover all the costs. It’s so freeing to be able to go on a mini-break and not have to worry about sacrificing my weekly budget to cover the abnormal expenses! Thankful to past Jess for setting this up so I could enjoy as much Sushi as I wanted without worrying 😜

Shopping = £0.60

I bought a postcard whilst at the beach for my collection. Seems kinda pointless to make this a category but I didn’t know how else to categorise this purchase.

TOTAL = £1701.80

Other than paying rent and my wine mishap – my spending this month was very average! I stuck to my £30/week allowance and made the most of sinking funds I already had in place.

INCOME

Student Loan = £3050.82

This is my last ever student loan drop 🤯 I cannot believe how fast the past three years have gone!! I sent the majority of this money straight to rent, then I put some aside for day-to-day spending, contributed to various sinking funds and sent 20% straight to savings.

Job #1 = £1313.69

First month back at full-time work – I had forgot how exhausting hospitality is 😅 This went straight into savings!

Job #2 = £530.03

Finally got paid for the multiple work trips I went on last month – probably the easiest £500 I’ve made so far! Again all of this went straight into savings.

Interest = £0.62

Not much but it’s something 😅 I will still continue to count this as an income stream to see the growth over time.

TOTAL = £4895.16

Obviously the majority of April’s income came from my student loan but I’m still happy with the amount of extra income I made 💪🏻. I have omitted April’s side hustle income because this tax year I am trying to keep my personal and “business” finances separate.

NET WORTH

What is a “net worth”?

Your “net worth” is a calculation of how much you are financially worth. To reach the number you add up your assets and take away any liabilities. The number left is your net worth!

April was a huge month for my net worth as I hit £30k 🎉 My goal was to hit this milestone by my 21st birthday – absolutely smashed it by reaching it a whole 37 days before my birthday!!

Start of the month = £28,037.13

End of the month = £30,532.56

Writing that number down feels very unbelievable, when I started on my personal finance journey in October 2019 I would never have guessed that I would have £10k in the bank leaving uni let alone on track to hit £35k 🤯

Well that’s it for April!! May is looking like a very calm month so my spending shouldn’t be high at all – we’ll see in a month!
