9 Cupboard Staples Everyone Should Always Have In
One of the ways that I helps me keep my food shop budget so low (£10 a week) is by making sure I always have these 9 staples in my cupboard. They are all very versatile and are often the key ingredient to my favourite cheap meals. These items tend to last a long time so having to replace them is rare. Plus it is even rarer that multiple of them will run out at the same time so if I have to replace them it won’t break my £10 budget.
#1 Oil
Kinda obvious but often overlooked as it seems like a given, but have you seen the price of oil recently! Woah!! I am glad I invest in the big one so I don’t have to factor this in to my shop more frequently.
#2 Salt
Do not underestimate the power of salt when attempting to make basic food taste great! Like with oil, this one is an obvious cupboard staple.
#3 Pepper
Another obvious one but everyone should have pepper on hand at all times!
#4 Stock Cubes
Now we’re getting into it! Stock cubes can add so so much flavour to pretty much anything! Add it to some veggies and water – you’ve got yourself a soup 😅
#5 Garlic
I love garlic – in pasta, on roasties, sprinkled into mash – garlic is a dream to make homemade food taste like restaurant food!

#6 Curry Powder
Curry’s are easy to make, quick, cheap and a great meal to freeze. Therefore, I always recommend having curry powder on hand at all times. Add some veggies, chickpeas, tinned tomatoes and coconut milk for a cheap, tasty curry 🤪
#7 Tomato Puree
Like curry powder, having tomato puree on hand is great for last minute meals. It is also very versatile as it can be used to make a variety of dishes or add some extra flavour. Add it to some toast or a wrap and melt cheese on top for a perfect fake pizza, love these after a night out 😉
#8 Soy Sauce
Another great staple which is very versatile. One of my favourite cheap dishes is veggie rice and adding some soy sauce to that is what really makes it!
#9 Cajun Spice
This is my secret weapon!! Add some Cajun Spice to anything to make it taste 10x better instantly. I particularly love using it to pimp up baked beans – whether there going on toast or a jacket potato it makes the dish taste even better!
There you go! The 9 cupboard staples I always have on hand which make sticking to my £10 per week food budget easier!
