Is Kindle Unlimited Worth the Money?

On the first day of 2023, I went onto Amazon to buy an ebook for my mum (she uses my kindle account) and it was £3.49 to buy or I could get it through kindle unlimited by paying 99p for a three month membership – absolute no brainer!!

So although I’d already technically saved money and got the ebook at a bargain price, being the frugal person I am, I made the absolute most of having the membership these past three months. Plus it’s really helped get me out of a reading slump I was in towards the end of 2022!

What is Kindle Unlimited?

Kindle Unlimited is a scheme run by Amazon where for a set price per month (currently £9.49 as of April 2023) you can borrow up to 10 titles at one time from their extensive library.

The Numbers are in…

My stats are a little crazy!! Across the three months, I borrowed and finished 51 books from the Kindle Unlimited library which would have cost me £193.40 if I’d bought the ebook version of each title meaning I’ve saved a whopping £192.41 by having the membership! That is insane!

But the real question is….

Would I pay full price?

Erm no probably not! Only because I felt kinda trapped by the membership and like I had to read from the Kindle Unlimited library or I was wasting the membership. Plus I can get access to the titles I want to read through Libby or Borrowbox for free!

But I will be looking out for the same or similar deal again as I did enjoy having access to the kindle unlimited library. The one thing I hate about Libby is not being able to read the titles on my kindle because they haven’t extended that service to the UK yet.

However, if you are not crazy like me and can enjoy access to the kindle unlimited library without it taking over your entire life then I think this scheme is perfect for bookworms. For a set price of £9.49 per month, you can borrow as many books as you like across the month. And considering the average price of an ebook is currently £3.06, you only have to read 4 books per month to get your moneys worth!

Plus, like with all amazon subscriptions, you can cancel at anytime so if you realise it isn’t working out for you, simply cancel it!

Even better you can test it out for 30 days on a free trial! Just make sure you cancel before the 30 days are over if it’s not for you.

My Kindle Unlimited Recommendations

The Kindle Unlimited library is constantly changing. So when I went down a little google rabbit hole trying to find some good titles to borrow, most had already been taken off the scheme. So I thought I would share a few of my favourite reads which are currently available on the kindle unlimited library!!

The Guest List by Lucy Foley

Never have I gasped out loud on a packed London tube in rush hour but this book didn’t really leave me with a choice. An incredible thriller that will keep you engaged and guessing from beginning to end!

The Comfort Book by Matt Haig

I have read a couple of Haig’s fiction books and have loved every single one but this (a non-fiction for once) was just amazing. If you need a confidence bump or some motivation to live your best life, this is the book for you!!

Passive Income, Aggressive Retirement by Rachel Richards

Considering this is a finance-focused blog, it seems only right to include a wonderful finance book from your savvy money bbf Rachel Richards! This book is jam packed full of ideas. It will leave you with a to do list the size of your arm and the motivation to just get stuck in.

The Last Mrs Parrish by Liv Constantine

If you are currently in a reading slump or looking for your next favourite read, look no further. This psychological thriller is just fabulous and is the perfect escapism.

The Housemaid by Frida McFadden

I’d seen this one all over social media and was so glad I gave it a shot! This psychological thriller will keep you on your toes till the very end, constantly trying to guess the full story.

Side note: if you have read both The Last Mrs Parrish and The Housemaid please DM me which one you preferred. I am dying to talk about them but none of my friends have finished both 🙁

Evidence of the Affair by Taylor Jenkins Reid

This short 88 page beauty is another hit out of the park from Reid. It really sucks you in and without a doubt ends way before you’re ready for it too!

Anything by Natasha Madison

Madison is one of my all time favourite adult romance authors – her books just hit the spot every single time! She is the queen of angst, smut and tropes! Plus she has recently (like within the last week) added her entire collection to the kindle unlimited library – so enjoy!!
