AmeriCamp is the agency I have used for the past two years to facilitate my US visa so I can spend the 3 months working at summer camp.

Insurance Covers Your Grace Period Too

Now this is something I was gutted to find out too late as it wasn’t the case with the first agency I used but it’s a great bonus.

Agencies will insure you for the time you are actually working at camp but typically this insurance ends on your last working day. This means if you are using your 30-day grace period to travel the US, you’ll need to take out your own insurance policy.

Which is exactly what I had to do in year 1 and assumed I had to do in year 2 too. So I took out a policy that cost over £100 for 6 weeks of post-camp travel. This was to cover me in the US, Guatemala and Mexico as I went down to Central America to study Spanish after camp.

If you’ve ever had to take out travel insurance for a trip to the US, comparatively to travel insurance for say Europe, it’s super expensive.

So had I known that my AmeriCamp fees included insurance for the grace period too I could’ve saved myself a decent amount. I won’t be making that mistake again and neither should you!

In-Person Camp Fairs

In-person camp fairs are a great way to get hired, especially for first timers. You get to meet camp directors in person and ask them all the questions you have.

Plus, a lot of applicants walk away from a camp fair with a job offer or maybe a few.
