How To Save Money On Subscriptions

Netflix, Spotify, Disney+, Amazon Prime, oh and don’t forget about Kindle Unlimited – subscriptions can add up very quickly and before you know it you’re paying out hundreds each month for something that is often seen as an essential but is simply entertainment. But you don’t have to settle for paying full price.

Here are a few tips & tricks on how to save money on subscriptions…

Get A Family Account

Whilst more expensive in terms of the money value, Family Accounts are often cheaper than multiple individual accounts. Grouping together with a few others and getting a Family Account then splitting the cost can work out cheaper for everyone.

Take Advantage of Free Trials

Planning to take out a new subscription because you want to want/listen to something specific? Why don’t you just take advantage of the free trials most of these services offer. Best thing is you can take advantage of them more than once! You can sign up with a new email address to automatically trigger a new free trial or look out for new offers from your existing logins. For example, I love using Canva Premium but refuse to pay for it. Canva is one of the good ones that constantly offers new free trials. So I have been benefitting from Canva Premium for nearly a year but haven’t paid a penny. I simply cancel when the free trial is up and then every time I’m offered a new free trial I take full advantage of it.

Get Full Value

It’s so easy to collect subscriptions like they’re trading cards and think they are all essential. But think about it, if you are watching Netflix you can’t be watching Disney+ or Amazon Prime at the same time. So why are you paying for all three at the same time. Instead why don’t you make a rule to only have one subscription on the go at anyone time and you take full advantage of it for the duration you have it. Being on top of your subscriptions like this will take them out of the essentials category and into your wants entertainment budget as the cost would only incur when you will actually use the service.

Tit for Tat

Join up with a couple friends and sort out a tit for tat scheme. Say I pay for Spotify, you pay for Netflix – we both benefit from using both but only paying for one subscription a month. There’s been a lot of chatter about these companies cracking down on password sharing but I just can’t see them being able to enforce this. So for now, as someone who has been doing this password sharing thing for years, this system works and is a great way for everyone to benefit.

Threaten To Cancel

One of my favourite tricks!! Have you ever gone to cancel a subscription and had to click through multiple offers to actually get to the cancel page. Well subscription services want to keep your business (& your money) so will offer you discount upon discount to get you to stay. Take advantage of this marketing tactic and threaten to cancel to see what discount you can get.

Go Cold Turkey

Obviously, the easiest way to save money on subscriptions is to not pay for subscriptions. Cancel everything and go cold turkey for a month to see what services you actually miss and want to have. Then try a few of the above tricks to lower your subscription costs going forward.

There we go, a few tips & tricks to help you save money on your subscriptions! Do you do any of these things already? Have any other tips you’d add to the list?
